Ha! Only joking, its really really good! But you knew that already didn’t you? Because everybody likes the Dark Knight, even people who hate films about millionaires who dress up as crime fighting bats. Yeah, even those guys!
Like “No Country For Old Men” it thankfully lived up to the hype and wasn’t crushed by unrealistic expectations. Some people did lose the run of themselves are start comparing it to things like the Godfather Part 2 and Taxi Driver, which I don’t really understand. Its suffice to say that The Dark Knight is just super fucking brilliant. There’s no point in my reaming out all the things that made it super brilliant as soon you will have seen it and agreed with all my points anyway. I will just through out a few half-formed brain farts about it.
The one thing people are ranting on about the most about TDK (that’s cool speak for the Dark Knight, nerds) is Heath Ledger’s performance. I have to break from the party line here and suggest that yes, he is very good as the Joker, but he’s not as good as some people are saying. Now don’t come round my house and stick pencils in my eyes, he is very good, but people are going on like this is one of the all time greatest actings ever. Its not. Its perfectly good for what it is though. The knock on effect is that this cult of worship for Ledger’s Joker has sprung up immediately. When I went to see it there was a gang of lads in the cinema who cheered and sniggered at everything the Joker did. He could have eaten a Moro and they would have thought it was brilliant. Equally, he could have set fire to a baby and they would have cheered.
This exposes what might be the only flaw with the film, which for me is that Batman/Bruce Wayne doesn’t get enough attention. In comic book movies the villains are vitally important and TDK goes out of its way to establish enemies worthy of Batman, but in doing so it ends up slightly fetishing the criminals in detriment to exploring the central character. I don’t want to come across as some kind of moralising bastard, but its kind of disappointing when people start rooting for the bad guy. Bad guys are cunts. In the real world bad guys sell heroin to children, and kick your face off for looking at them funny. But in films some people have a tendency to applaud unspeakable acts of shitness because the villain is portrayed as being cool. Whilst I like to see an interesting and meaty foil for our hero, ultimately I want to see them fail and the hero to succeed. In this age of Grand Theft Auto we seem to have raised the digital villain up for worship, whilst ignoring the fact that in reality we would want nothing to do with them.
Still its a minor gripe, as I say, the film only slightly loses its focus. The rest is super whizz bang techno kick face stuff, with the correct amount of humour, drama and plot. All the major acting parts are fantastically played, and the action sequences are some of the best my 4 eyes have ever seen. Well done everyone!
SLIGHT SPOILER COMING UP! AVERT EYES!
I hope hope hope that they recast the Joker. I hope that this current wave of enthusiasm for Ledger’s final full role doesn’t convince the film makers that they can’t recast him. They have set up the Joker perfectly as a character for future films, he as much confirms this in his final speech. The critical flaw ofBurton’s otherwise great ‘89 version of Batman was that he killed Bruce Wayne’s greatest foe at the end of the first film. Thus setting up the rest of the series for a villain of the week scenario. In tribute to Ledger people may suggest that it would be offensive to recast what is being touted as his greatest performance, but I would suggest that it would be a tribute to his great interpretation of the character to have another actor take up the mantle and continue what Ledger started.
Senior Iron-Man, the ball is now in your court.
